Intro

Optical Art: Form Follows Illusion is a fictitious exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta, designed to showcase the captivating, illusionary works of optical art pioneers. Inspired by meticulous arrangements of form and color, this exhibition highlights the complex interplay that defines Optical Art.

Challenge

This project began as an assignment to design a poster for an imagined exhibition representing a chosen art movement. Fascinated by Optical Art’s mathematical precision and the illusion of depth and movement, Tung chose to feature Victor Vasarely’s works. The challenge was to visually capture the perspective distortions and formal ambiguity that make Optical Art so mesmerizing while maintaining clarity in conveying event information.

Solution

The direction was to embrace the feature artworks’ visual complexity by animating the event’s name along the contours, heightening the sense of dimensionality. A monochromatic palette, reminiscent of modernist aesthetics, draws attention to the intricate forms, while the Futura typeface complements the geometric artwork, enhancing the overall cohesion between text and imagery.
